It is important to protect the eyes from the sun’s harmful rays by wearing sunglasses. Most of us know that ultraviolet rays cause sunburn, blistering and potentially skin cancer, so we sensibly cover ourselves with suntan lotion. But we are not always so careful about protecting our eyes with the right kind of sunglasses.
Our eyes naturally give a small amount of protection but exposure to bright sunlight can damage the eye without adequate protection. That's where Blankstone Opticians wide range of Designer Sunglasses come in.

We carry a variety of leading brands of sunglasses that give 100% UV protection.  You can be sure to find a pair for any pursuit, whether they are for the beach, sports, driving or just as the latest accessory.

More about UV Rays

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation consists of invisible rays from the sun. The three bands of UV light are: -

UVA rays are primarily absorbed within the lens of the eye.

UVB rays are the ones that burn the skin and can harm the eyes. When combined with cold, wind and snow, UVB has the potential to cause snow blindness, a temporary but painful condition of the cornea of the eye.
Long term exposure to the sun’s invisible rays can also accelerate ageing of the macula, the most sensitive part of the retina on which light rays are focused. Over a period of time, it may also cause cataracts, a gradual clouding of the lens of the eye. The cells in your eyes, unlike those in your skin, do not have the ability to regenerate. Thus, when you expose your eyes to UV rays, you put yourself at risk of painful diseases that may leave you partially or completely blind in the future.

UVC rays are normally absorbed in the atmosphere and therefore unable to reach the earth’s surface.
Polarised light is reflected from flat surfaces such as roads or smooth water. Polarised sunglasses are specially manufactured to substantially reduce this type of light reaching the eye which results in a dramatic reduction in glare. Polarised sunglasses are particularly beneficial for activities such as water sports, skiing, golfing and cycling because of the elimination of glare giving a clearer view. They are also recommended for driving during day or night conditions to eliminate glare from sunlight and vehicle headlamps.
We have a large selection of polarized sunglasses from Maui Jim. Both manufacturers have the polarization technology to give you with the best solution to glare, offering you exceptional clarity, visual comfort and contrast’.
